A conductor, teacher, and one of the outstanding French pianists of the 20th century, known especially for his perceptions of the later Romantic composers. Alfred-Denis-Cortot was born on Sept. 26, 1877, in Nyon, Switz.
Studied at the Paris Conservatory, he gained experienced at being an assistant conductor in 1902, in which he then also conducted one of the first French performances of Wagner's music drama "The Twilight of the Gods". He was the founder of the Societe des Concerts as well as introducing many works of contemporary composers.
He formed a trio with the violinist, Jacques Thibaud, and the cellist Pablo Casals, which they gained an international reputation, this happened in 1905. He also then founded the Ecole Normale de Musique in 1918, which was a private institution for music, that ended up influencing a lot of people.
He used to publish works on the technique of the piano, in addition to editing works from both Schumann and Chopin.
Yet he died on June 15, 1962, in Lausanne, France.
